Education and Unemployment in Bangladesh
Bangladesh has made significant progress in education over the years, with the literacy rate reaching 74.66% for individuals aged seven and above as of 2022. The net enrollment rate in primary education has also been impressive, standing at 98% in 2018, reflecting near-universal school attendance. However, disparities remain, particularly in gender and dropout rates, with boys being more likely to be out of school at various education levels. While access to education has improved, challenges in quality, infrastructure, and skill-based learning continue to impact students’ readiness for the job market.

Unemployment remains a critical issue, especially among the youth. In 2023, the overall unemployment rate stood at approximately 5.06%, showing a slight decrease from previous years. However, youth unemployment is notably higher, estimated between 12.5% and 16% for individuals aged 15 to 24. Despite economic growth, a skills gap and limited job opportunities contribute to rising frustration among young people seeking employment. As of April 2023, Bangladesh had approximately 2.5 million unemployed individuals, highlighting the urgent need for vocational training, entrepreneurship support, and policy interventions to create sustainable job opportunities. Addressing these challenges is essential for empowering youth and building a more resilient and prosperous future.
